Lone Star Events & Sports is the proud home of North Texas Roller Derby (NTRD) — one of the most exciting roller derby leagues in the region. Our 27,000 sq ft facility serves as the venue for all NTRD home bouts, practices, and events right here in Denton, TX.
Originally a banked-track roller skating marathon started in the 1930s, roller derby is now an excitingly fast-paced, full contact, international sport reborn in Austin, TX in the early 2000s. With over 2,000 roller derby leagues and 100,000 skaters worldwide, the sport has never been bigger — and some of the best action in North Texas happens right here on our rink.
Whether you want to watch a bout, join the league, or just learn what roller derby is all about — you're in the right place.
A skater-owned and operated league dedicated to the thrill of roller derby, building an inclusive community, and empowering athletes of all levels.
Two teams of skaters compete on an oval-shaped, flat track on quad roller skates. Each team fields four blockers and one jammer per jam. The pack of blockers is the central battleground of every play.
The jammer — identified by the star on their helmet — scores one point for each opponent they lap after their initial pass through the pack. The goal is to break through while stopping the other team's jammer from doing the same.
Play happens in two-minute sprints called jams. The lead jammer — first to break through the pack legally — can call off the jam at any time by tapping their hips, ending play and giving teams 30 seconds to rotate before the next jam starts.
A full bout consists of two 30-minute halves with a 15-minute intermission. Teams rotate skaters in and out between jams, making strategy and depth as important as individual skill. The team with the most points at the end wins.
Roller derby is a full-contact sport. Blockers may use their hips, shoulders, and torso to block opponents — but hits to the head, back, or with elbows and forearms are illegal and will result in penalties.
There's nothing fake about roller derby. NTRD skaters train multiple days per week to sharpen their athletic skills, strategy, and teamwork. Every bout is a real, competitive game — no scripts, no showmanship, just derby.
The point scorer. The jammer starts behind the pack and fights through blockers on both teams to score. Every opponent they pass after the initial break-through earns a point. The jammer has to be fast, agile, and strategic.
The lead blocker and field general of the pack. The pivot wears a striped helmet cover and can receive the "star pass" from the jammer to become the jammer themselves — a strategic move that can shift the entire momentum of a jam.
Three blockers per team form the pack along with the pivot. Their job is two-fold — stop the opposing jammer from passing through, and open lanes for their own jammer to score. Blocking is a full-contact, full-body effort.
NSOs keep the game running — tracking penalties, managing the clock, keeping score, and ensuring fair play. NTRD welcomes NSO volunteers and it's a great way to get involved in the sport without putting on skates.
Never played roller derby before? No problem. NTRD's Rising Phoenixes training program is designed for complete beginners and lets you progress entirely at your own pace. Anyone over 18 is welcome regardless of experience, shape, size, or ability.
The program takes you from zero to derby-ready — teaching the fundamentals of skating and the rules of the game. All members of the league are considered a valuable part of the NTRD family from day one.
